Vintage '55 Gibson Les Paul Custom finished in classic Ebony. This beauty not only sounds superb, but we think it may well be the best playing Les Paul we have stocked at our shop to date, with a super-low action and incredible feeling neck.
It's in fantastic condition for a 70 year old vintage guitar and has no breaks or repairs. The body is completely covered in lacquer checking, which looks stunning when it catches the light - there some dings and rash as you'd expect. The neck as a wonderful aged feel that is a joy to play - a few light scuffs but nothing notable or affecting playability. There's no fret problems and everything works as it should without issue.
The spec includes the iconic Mahogany body with Mahogany top, a comfortable medium profile Mahogany neck and an Ebony fingerboard. It has gold hardware including Kluson waffle back tuners, stoptail and ABR-1 no wire bridge.
The original P-90/AlNiCo pickups were replaced at some stage with humbucker pickups and the routing is a tidy, professionally job. The pickups are exceptionally difficult to identify so we adopted the help of some of the experts on the vintage Gibson/Pickup forums to help. The neck pickup measures 7.4k, has a PAT number stamp and is most likely a highly-desirable Tim Shaw from the late 70s or early 80s. The bridge pickup measures 7.5k and is a zebra humbucker. The general consensus is that it is either an early 60's Gibson PAF, an 80's Tim Shaw, or a very early, late 70s (pre-stamp) Seymour Duncan '59. The pots have also been upgraded at some stage of its long life.
We have included as many photos as possible on the listing, but we have lots more internal photos having checked the guitar thoroughly ourselves - including the pickups, cavities, pots and the hardware etc. We are happy to share them with interested customers if requested by email.
The guitar is available with 2x cases. The first is a vintage example with blue lining and again challenging to identify. The experts have said that this is most likely to be a Selmer case, with several saying they had identical cases that were sold as an option on late 60s Les Pauls. The condition is relatively poor with lots of wear and some structural damage, but it would still be perfectly usable for storage and is very in-keeping with the Les Paul. The 2nd option has red lining and is more structurally sound (and more modern) case in excellent condition. The buyer can choose which case is preferred or have both cases. If both cases required, buyers must contact us prior to purchasing so additional shipping costs can be discussed.
At time of listing, there are various mid 50's Les Paul Customs on the global market priced at over £65,000. This is your opportunity to buy this appreciating asset, piece of history, and above all else, incredible guitar(!), at a fraction of the price.
